If you are both citizens of France they will with some nice asking start the papers beforehand and issue them when you arrive, then register the marriage, then report back to the French embassy who will certify the documents, but be prepared for a long long wait.
We have only done the legal for about 3 couples and it was many trips to the embassy and they seldom answer the phone and only will talk in French to French nationals….
The French government is very strict about papers!
